Were the Chinese people treated badly during the gold rush?

Yes, the Chinese did get treated badly, the English and Europeans were mean and cruel to them. Sometimes they would beat the Chinese up and burn there tents down. The English and Europeans didn't like the Chinese because of there religion, hair styles, different looks, different clothes, different dietary habits and different language and lifestyle. People didn't like the Chinese so much the governments had laws put against them like they had to be taxed if they came by ship from the shore or else they would have to come from the north of Australia and travel by foot to the gold fields. It was very unfair back in the 1850s Gold Rush in Ballarat. There was also a lot of stereotyping too.

Asians took the jobs of hard working Aussies in the gold rushes because they worked for less pay, that's why they were treated badly by many Aussies. It got so bad that the government put down the W.A.P law, the White Australian Policy that makes it hard for anyone not white to get in to Australia

The Chinese were treated very badly on the Australian goldfields. They were discriminated against for their strange appearance to the Europeans, e.g., Chinese men wore a long plait, known as a queue, which was considered strange and feminine by the European workers.

They were also discriminated against because the Chinese were remarkably efficient at finding the gold. In some circumstances after the Europeans left a claim because they could no longer find any gold, the Chinese would sift through the used creek and more than often find left over gold. The Chinese would also go through the discarded mullock heaps, and invariably find more gold. They were hardworking, persistent people, and this angered the European workers. On some occasions, they were driven out by forceful riots, such as those that took place in Lambing Flat, New South Wales. In these riots, the Chinese had their possessions pounded, and the men were often scalped to remove their queue.

The authorities maintained their right to dig and they were often allowed to return, but often these same authorities turned a blind eye to the terrible atrocities being perpetrated upon the Chinese.
