A generation is the decade you were born in. The word generation can be used in a sentence as: My generation is the 1980s. A generation is also the length of time, on average, between the birth of a child and the birth of that child's child. In that sense we count generations, and might say that "Two generations have passed since John F. Kennedy was assassinated." We can also say things like, "My father was the first generation of his family born in America." Or James was in the last generation to grow up wihtout television."
