For punishment to be effective you will have to establish certain criteria. I like to call it the CIA of raising a child. Consistency, Immediacy and Appropriateness. If applied regularly, in most circumstances, you will raise a well adjusted human being. Of course if your punishment is inconsistent, is delayed until "father comes home" or "does not fit the crime", the punishment is worthless.
