an idler arm holds the right side of the steering linkage.its job is to mirror the movement of the pittman arm.the pittman arm holds the left side of the linkage(pittman arm is attached to the steering gear. i.e. when you turn the steering wheel, the steering gear turns the pittman arm, which moves the steering linkage, which turns the tires.) idler and pittman need to move together so tires move together. (for more info try searching "parallel steering linkage")
The Pittman arm is named after its inventor, an American engineer named William Pittman, who developed the component in the early 20th century. The design was intended to connect the steering gear to the steering linkage in vehicles, allowing for better steering precision and control. The term has since become standardized in automotive terminology, referring specifically to this type of steering mechanism.
You have to have a puller to get it off the gear box, no other way. PIT-MAN ARM PULLER
You need a wedge tool to separate the arm from the main steering rod , then unfasten the two bolts and it is off .
Well they do make pittman arm tools... might help. if you dont have one, sometimes places like Oreily auto parts have tools designated that you buy, use, and then can refund full price so that you only have to be out the money if you lose it or keep it.
You will need a special tool called a "fork" that pops the connection. Remove the nut at the end of the idle arm joint then put the fork in place and give it a few good hits with a big hammer. Of course you will complete the destruction of the idle arm, but you're replacing it anyway. After the joint is loose, remove the bolts from the frame and drop the idle arm and replace it.
there is an "idler arm", its part of the steering and runs horizontal, as well as a pitman arm

To replace an idle arm, first, ensure the vehicle is safely lifted and supported on jack stands. Remove any necessary components that obstruct access, such as the wheel or suspension parts. Unbolt the old idle arm from its mounting points, then install the new idle arm in reverse order, ensuring all fasteners are tightened to the manufacturer's specifications. Finally, align and check the vehicle's steering and suspension for proper function before taking it for a test drive.
