Prior to WW11 most families were as you say joint families. The war brought about many changes in science and technology, most of all communication. We now have the ability to communicate with almost anyone in the world through our computer and mobile phone etc. Having the ability to do this we have been (tuned) away from the required frequency which was once the family. Where once the frequency was tuned to the Home service or short wave, we have reset our fequecy to Long Wave. So instead of listening to the local news we are more interested in listening to the international news service.
The obvious solution is to change our frequency again so that we can listen to programs such as Family Favourites and Children's Hour. I believe that some of you youngsters will understand what I am trying to say, certainly you older folk will. I have heard my daughter tell of a friend who, before going into the shower, wrapped her mobile up in plastic so that she could talk to her friend eight thousand miles away. (Australia is large enough for such vast distances)
