Quill pens
Quill pens were the main writing instruments from the 6th to the 19th century.
In the 1700s, quill pens were commonly made from goose feathers and were relatively inexpensive, costing around 2-3 pence each. However, the price could vary depending on the quality of the quill and the region in which it was purchased. Quill pens were a popular writing tool during this time period due to their flexibility and durability.
In the 1890s, people commonly used inkwells and quill pens made from feathers, as well as metal dip pens that required regular dipping in ink. Pencil technology also existed, with pencils made from graphite or colored chalk encased in wood being widely available.
NO! Use paint pens if you want to color your griptape. =)
Steel pens were coming into use, but quill pens were still widely used and both had to be dipped in ink wells. There no fountain pens which carried their own ink supply. Artists used special dip pens and brushes for art work in ink. Fountain pens have been used since the 10th century, so yes, there were fountain pens in the 1800s. And they did have there own ink supply. In fact, vintage fountain pens, still working, can be found for sale for over $500.
Beethoven primarily used quill pens made from bird feathers for his compositions. These pens allowed for fine control and flexibility when writing music. He also occasionally used metal nib pens as they became more available during his lifetime. The choice of pen contributed to his distinctive handwriting and musical notation style.
I don't think they're actually used, but one tradition of the Court is to lay out a feather pen for each lawyer arguing before the Supreme Court. These are intended as keepsakes as a reminder of their experience, because feather pens were used when the Supreme Court was first established. I imagine the justices use modern pens, and most likely have individual personal preferences. For more information about US Supreme Court traditions, see Related Questions, below.
