The name derives from Clan MacMudah of Scotland, going back at least to the 15th century. The clan was loosely associated with, and possibly related to, Clan Stuart, as in Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots.

A James Moody settled in the Carolinas shortly after the Revolutionary War, around the time of the ratification of the US Constitution. The family then migrated into the area now known as southern Mississippi, in and around Pearl River County.
