There are no reliable statistics (only estimates) because child abuse is unreported, under-reported, often goes unnoticed, and often is not prosecuted or prosecuted fully. For example, a young mother was in school. Twice a week, the father took the 4-year old overnight. When the child returned home, the mother saw large hand print bruises on her child's back. The child went to daycare every day, where the child had swimming class. The mother HAD to report the bruises to the school (to protect herself AND her child). Unknown to the mother, the father left the child with his then-girlfriend who beat the child in the bathtub for dropping the soap. The only action-- the father was told to keep the child away from the girlfriend. The girlfriend was never charged or prosecuted. That is how child abuse never becomes an official record.
