In the late 1970's science made a breakthrough and isolated another set of proteins called HLA (Human Leukocyte Antigens). Unlike basic blood type proteins and grouping proteins mentioned above, the HLA proteins are found in all of your cells except the red blood cells. These antigens are found primarily in your white blood cells and are used by the body's immune system to detect foreign bodies and fight off infections. Like blood types, some HLA types are rarer than others so the exclusion percentage will vary depending upon the individual's HLA makeup. While still not as reliable as DNA testing, HLA can exclude potential fathers with up to an 80% accuracy rating. Unfortunately however, HLA requires a larger blood sample, preventing the test from being performed on small infants.

What is the purpose of the human leukocyte antigen test?

The human leukocyte antigen test, also known as HLA, is a test that detects antigens (genetic markers) on white blood cells. There are four types of human leukocyte antigens: HLA-A, HLA-B, HLA-C, and HLA-D.

What is cpt code 89255?

CPT code 89255 refers to the laboratory procedure for the isolation of human leukocyte antigen (HLA) typing from blood or tissue. This code is specifically used for the serological typing of HLA class I and class II antigens, which are crucial for transplant compatibility testing and immunological studies. It is important for matching organ donors with recipients to reduce the risk of transplant rejection.

What colour phlebotomy tube for HLA?

The color of the phlebotomy tube used for HLA (Human Leukocyte Antigen) testing is typically lavender or purple. These tubes contain EDTA, an anticoagulant that helps preserve the blood sample for accurate testing. Always verify with specific laboratory guidelines, as practices may vary.

How many classes are there of HLA gene products?

There are three classes of HLA gene products: Class I (HLA-A, HLA-B, HLA-C), Class II (HLA-DP, HLA-DQ, HLA-DR), and Class III (complement proteins). These gene products play a crucial role in the immune system by presenting antigens to T cells and regulating immune responses.
