get a book Run your spark plug wire from the #1 plug to the #1 lug on the distributor cap. Then follow the rest of the firing order going clockwise around the cap.

Good question. It depends on your point of reference. If you Look UP at it while it is installed on the ceiling, then use the nob or pulley that controls the fan to use as the 12 marker on the clock. If it goes to the right its clockwise and to the left it is counter-clockwise

Look on the part number sticker.
Find the tower with the #1 spark plug wire. Going clockwise from here, the firing order is 18436572.
A way to tell is by the sound the motor makes. If it is winding slowly with no force it could be going out. If it skips or whines without action it is out.
look at the serial numbers on the side of the block and get a decoding book.
The horsepower of the motor is based on the efficiency curve of the pump it is to drive. The higher the head pressure of the pump the more HP it is going to require to drive it. Look up the pump model on line and look for its characteristics curve. there it should tell you the HP you will need for a specific flow.
To see if the motor is three phase or single phase look at the motor's nameplate. There it will tell you what the voltage needs to be and what system phase the motor needs to be connected to operate properly.
