When the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the LDS or Mormon church) banned the practice of polygamy in October, 1890, those who did not agree with this decision left the Church. The dissenters were unorganized for awhile, but organization began in 1912 with Lorin C. Woolley. By 1932 the Council of Friends formed, naming seven high priests and uniting most of the dissenters into a single group. The FLDS name did not appear until 1987, but this appears to be more of a name change, not a reorganization.
The FLDS (Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) split from the LDS (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) when the LDS church banned the practice of polygamy over 100 years ago. There are many huge difference between the two religions today. The FLDS has several thousand members, mostly all in the western United States and Canada. The LDS has over 14 million members all over the world. The FLDS generally live in isolated communities made up almost entirely of other members. The LDS live and participate in regular society. The FLDS tend to be quite secretive and insular, the LDS are not. The FLDS has it's own set of church leaders and does not recognize the LDS leaders as legitimate. The LDS do not recognize the FLDS leaders as legitimate. The FLDS have a very distinctive style of dress, while the LDS look and dress like most everyone else in mainstream society. The most important difference is that the FLDS believe that various changes made in practices among the LDS were not sanctioned by God and therefore they try to live the fundamental or original beliefs of Mormonism, including that of polygamous marriages. The FLDS have also developed many doctrinal beliefs and practices which were never taught among the LDS.
There are numerous breakoffs of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Some of the more well known are the FLDS and RLDS churches. Some churches named the Church of Christ have also broken off of the LDS church, but the name is commonplace so not all of those churches are splits from the LDS church.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the LDS or "Mormon" church) does not really have 'fundamentalist' members. Of course some are more devout in their religious practice than others, but all are expected to believe the published doctrines of the Church. (You can learn about these doctrines at the "Related Links" below.) You may be thinking of members of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (also called the FLDS church). This group broke off from the LDS or Mormon church over 100 years ago in a dispute over the practice of polygamy. The FLDS today differs quite a lot from the LDS church. The FLDS continue to practice polygamy, have very strict modest dressing standards, generally live in isolated communities, and are expected to have firm devotion to their prophet. In general, although both churches share the same scripture and early history, the FLDS is much more extreme in their doctrine and practice than the mostly mainstream LDS church.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has no denominations or sects that it claims as part of it. There are several groups that have LEFT the LDS church, but they are not considered Mormons by the LDS church, even though some of them call themselves Mormons. The two best known are the RLDS (Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints), now called the Community of Christ, and the FLDS (Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints), which is in the news a lot presently. The FLDS is the group that is polygamous.
Rulon Jeffs was the father of Warren Jeffs, former leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FLDS Church), not to be confused with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS or Mormon Church).
First of all, the FLDS church is NOT part of the LDS church although the LDS church did practice polygamy for many decades in the late 1800s. Often, male children in the FLDS church are ostracized and treated as if they are outcasts. They are seen as competition for marrying the females in the group, which the older males want all to themselves. They are known as "the lost boys of the FLDS." The females are being shown in the news on TV presently because of an allegation of sexual abuse by a young FLDS girl. That's why you see the girls more right now, because they are being moved to a safe location and interviewed in an effort to locate the girl who made the call.
Some people think that because they confuse a polygamous split-off group called the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS) led by Warren Jeffs, with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints(LDS), traditionally called Mormons, that Mitt Romney and John Huntsman are members of. They do not realize that FLDS and LDS are two distinct and separate groups. The Church of Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormons) does not practice polygamy. If any member of the LDS church was found to be abusing a child, they would be excommunicated immediately.
Within the Fundamentalist LDS Church, wearing the color red is prohibited beacause it is reserved for the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. White symbolizes purity. Most FLDS members wear pastel or muted, dark colors rather than bright colors or loud patterns.
There are no religions aside from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the LDS or Mormons) that practice baptism for the dead, except for perhaps a few small break-off sects of the LDS church (most break-off sects do not follow the practice).
I don't know why you asked that question. "LDS" means "Latter Day Saints" and refers to anyone who is a member of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, or LDS church. That is pretty self explanatory. So the LDS were ALWAYS allowed in the LDS church because the LDS church is made up of only LDS people. Duh.
