Why can't girls propose to boys?

During most of human history, the males have been dominant. That is sometimes called a patriarchal society (literally, patriarchal means ruled by fathers). In a male dominated society, it is considered presumptuous for a girl to propose to a boy. If boys are more important than girls, then it is up to boys to take the initiative in such things (and in pretty much all things). Recently we have evolved a society, at least in North America, in which men and women have more or less equal rights, which we can call an egalitarian society (from the French word egal, meaning equal). In such a society, girls are free to propose to boys if they so desire. Some boys, I am sure, would be delighted to receive such a proposal.
