The US has a population of approximately a third of a billion people, as compared to the total world population which is approaching seven billion people, so there are about 20 times as many people living outside the US as compared to inside the US. Many of these people are living in countries that are not as well developed as the US and which suffer from starvation, poverty, unemployment, and many social ills which are less prevalent in the US. If the US did not restrict Immigration it would be flooded with far more immigrants than it can assimilate. A certain number of immigrants can be incorporated into the existing economic and social structures, but there is a limit. Just as an individual could manage to entertain only so many house guests at a given time, so can a nation only deal with so many immigrants.
