Usually, a Muslim man may seek for a second wife in case his former wife is suffering from a life illness that prevents her from practicing sex with her husband, or not capable of delivering a baby. He may marry a second wife who is divorced or who is widow and is in need of a man to take care of her and her children.
However, it is not a rule for a Muslim man to have more than wife. The overwhelming majority of Muslim men are married to only one wife. It is an exception to have a second wife.
