Did Larry mcmurtry while writing lonesome dove use a real person to fashion the characters gus and Woodrow were they real Texas rangers or who were his models?

I am Don Payne and I am a Texan as well as a devotee of literature and history. While McMurtry has never, so far as I know, claimed any specific historical basis for Call and Gus, Gus's death is much like that of the historical cattleman Oliver Loving, whose partner, Charles Goodnight, was a former Texas Ranger (like Call and Gus). Hope this helps. My question is whether anyone has been able to determine a timeline for the events in the Lonesome Dove series?
