i believe it all began in transilvanya with the vampire king count Dracula

NOOOOO!

I am Romanian (Transylvania is merely a region of Romania) and a folklorist and I an tell you that vampires are NOT part of our mythology. We DO have legends about a sort of undead (mischievous and/or malevolent or even harmful) and garlic IS supposed to protect you from them, but in another region of the country. Anyway, they are not bloodsucking beasts. Bram Stoker may have based his novel on the myths and rumous concerning a real-life ruler, Vlad Tepes (Vlad the Impaller), whose father was nicknamed Vlad Dracul (the Devil) because his flag had a dragon painted on and the peasants mistook it for the Devil.
