Saying that a Mary Sue is a character that suceeds at everything, or everyone falls in love with, though this is the very basic form of Mary Sue. While making sure that ones characters has strenghts and weaknesses, one can't go and base that as the only thing that makes the characters Sues. This is more for fanfiction, then original work...
1.) Don't make characters OoC... When a canon character no longer acts like a canon character, they are an OC (original character) desquised to look like a canon character.
2.) Don't make changes to canon characters... For example, some fanfics I see, will go and change only one characters age and physical attributes, just to fit their OC. This is a huge no-no!
3.) Pay attention to canon... When you break canon, and make it fit your OC, instead of making the OC, fit the canon, it is rather taking liberties with the work.
4.) Be believable... Goes for both fanfiction and original work. Do ones research, don't make the reader come in and go, that can't happen...

What makes your character a Mary Sue is having them be a super-powerful character that does unrealistic things. Here are some things that might show a character is a Mary Sue (or Marty Stu):Being super special (special powers, special looks, special clothing, etc)Making the original characters act in ways that are not realistic to their personalities (all of them like/love/hate her for little or no reason, they abandon their usual friends for her or gang up with their enemies against her, etc)Having an unrealistically horrible or special childhood (abused and orphaned, heir to a throne, beaten daily by horrible step-parents, etc)Check out the link below for more!

A Mary Sue is the female protagonist/antagonist of a TV show, book, or movie. Happening mostly in books, Mary Sues are considered the worst kind of Original Character. A Mary Sue would be defined as impossibly perfect, no flaws whatsoever, and is the character that gets the most attention from the opposite or same sex. If these characters had flaws, they would be made to look cute. Really cute. Most of the time the Mary Sue would be a self insertion of the author/director, a kind of wish fufillment if you will. The male version of a Mary Sue would be called either a Marty Stu or Gary Stu.
