Ahab losses his leg to the white whale Moby Dick while hunting whales for oil. His rage and fury is beyond measure at literally and metaphorically losing a part of himself to this animal. While maddened and insane in the weeks afterwards, he eventual controls his unsubsided rage with the singular, maniacal purpose of killing Moby Dick. If Ahab's crew were to know Ahab's true intentions and monomania, they would never allow him to lead them to such purposeless, venegeful, and dangerous destruction. But Ahab will is strong and once the crew has shipped out, they are persuaded to take up Ahab's unholy quest as well.

The Pequod, Ahab's ship, chases Moby Dick around the world. Finding the white whale, an extensive pursuit ensues with Ahab leading the team of small harpoon boats. In the process of lancing Moby Dick, Ahab is caught in the whaleline and become bound to the thrashing Moby Dick. Stuck to the whale, the dead captain seems to gesture his men to continue the fight which they do with all the fury Ahab once had. In the process, Moby Dick destroys all the harpoon boats and the Pequod as well. One crew member, Ishmael, survives by floating on a life-preserved made from what was once a coffin. He susrvives to tell the tale.
