Very important, for without conflict, Romeo and Juliet would never have had to hide their love. Imagine for a moment that both families were neither friends nor enemies. It would be more likely that both Romeo and Juliet would be at high society parties and gatherings as were likely in the era. Thus, they would have encountered each other many a time and maybe even their parents would have wanted them to get married for financial and power reasons. There would be no intrigue as to who this other person is, or even that law of attraction where one always wants what one can't have. Thus, both Romeo and Juliet may have gone ahead with their parents' plans for each of them and thought nothing of the other. Or, they would have been forced to marry for the reasons disclosed above and Shakespeare would have made one kill the other, or they could have lived happily ever after. But in the end it is important to remember that without the tension of having to hide their love because of the conflict between the Montagues and Capulets, neither would have been driven to hide their love. Instead of feigning death, Juliet would have confronted her parents perhaps; instead of assuming true death, Romeo would never have had to fear Juliet's passing. Interesting to wonder what would have happened if the Montagues and Capulets had been like Indigo and Chapters who merged into one large corporation after many years of struggle. Perhaps Shakespeare was trying to show his audience that hate and dislike, although strong and inherent emotions that all humans are capable of, are not inherited but taught and can be groomed into children but not always succesfully. In this case, to the demise of the heir of the Montagues.
