The principle antagonist is Captain Ahab, the half-deranged skipper of a whaler who is obsessed with hunting down and killing the giant whale nicknamed 'Moby Dick', who once bit off a man's leg. Ahab is so consumed with this issue that he is willing to risk his own life and that of his crew, along with his ship, in order to achieve this aim. The whale would have to have been a Sperm Whale, as apart from Killer Whales, which don't grow to the vast size that the giant whales do, they are the only whales that are not plankton feeders and have jaws, and can potentially attack humans if antagonised. Otherwise he would be the mythical 'Great White Whale', a creature that doesn't really exist- the only white-coloured whales are Beluga's, which are small and gentle animals.

In fact from chapter 41 on, the narrator switches to a third-person omniscient perspective. The pronouns such as "I" or "we" slowly disappear.

In the epilogue we get back to the first-person narration.
