Nagaina is motivated by a desire for power over all the animals in the garden, and by a desire to keep herself and her yet unborn babies safe (maternal love and protection for her children). These desires motivate her to plan with her husband to kill all of the humans and for her to eventually try the same, then fight with Rikki-tikki-tavi. Nagaina wants her husband, Nag, to kill all of the human family (the Father, the Mother, and Teddy). She reasons that once the humans are gone, the mongoose, Rikki-tikki-tavi, will leave. Then Nagaina and Nag will again be "king and queen of the garden." Nagaina also tells her husband that they need to get rid of the mongoose because their baby cobras will soon be hatching from their eggs, so they need to be free from worry about a mongoose trying to kill them all. After Rikki kills Nag, Nagaina must protect herself and her yet unhatched babies by herself. She is chasing Darzee the tailorbird's wife (who is distracting Nagaina by pretending that she has a broken wing) while Rikki is destroying her eggs in the melon patch. Darzee's wife warn Rikki that she has gone to the house and "means killing." Rikki destroys two of the last three eggs, but takes the last one with him to the veranda where the humans are frozen in fear, with Nagaina poised to strike. Rikki taunts Nagaina to "come and fight" for her last cobra egg. She does just that, and manages to grab the egg and flee to her "rat hole" with Rikki in pursuit. He finally emerges from the cobra's hole, announcing that the "widow" (Nagaina) is dead.
