Two that spring to mind are 'Rites Of Passage' by William Golding, which won The Booker Prize that year, and Russell Hoban's anti-nuclear sci-fi novel 'Riddley Walker', set in post-Holocaust Southern England over 2000 years hence.

Others include 'The Panda's Thumb', a series of natural history essays focusing on evolution, by the biologist Stephen Jay Gould;

The Alternative Service Book, published by the Church of England for those within the Church who do not favour the strict formality of the Eucharist;

The famous children's picture book 'The Ant & The Elephant' by Bill Peet;

The English language reference book 'Practical English Usage' by Michael Swan, intended as a guide for foreigners learning to speak English;

The children's story book 'The Old Man of Lochnagar' , written by Prince Charles;

'Camera Lucida' by French philosopher Roland Barthes, in which he examines the philosophical aspects of Photography (it was his last work- Barthes was run over by a lorry later that year)

Several science-fiction works came out in 1980, including 'Expanded Universe' by Robert A. Heinlein, and 'The Venus Hunters' by J.G.Ballard.

For a full (though not complete) list of titles that were published in 1980, refer to Wikipedia- look up '1980 books'. The site enables youto click on individual titles to find out more about them.
