Most artistic and literary movements are rebellions against the previous movement. New young artists want to find different methods of expression than their predecessors. The Romantic Movement rebelled against the Neoclassical movement which preceded it. The Neoclassicists preferred order, symmetry, the unities, succinct, compact universal expressions, restrained emotions. The Romantics believed in Nature, the organic, the wild, the unwieldy, the extreme.
