Jacob Marley died seven years prior to our first meeting Scrooge. Due to the way he treated people and put business above that of mankind he was doomed to walk the earth in everlasting torment. He speaks of the chain to which he is tethered as created by him in life and its decoration of keys locks safes, money bags and ledgers all represent what he put before mankind
Scrooge closed the window, and examined the door through which the Ghost had entered. It was double-locked, as he had locked it with his own hands previously, and the bolts undisturbed. He tried to say "Humbug!" but stopped at the first syllable
There was no real nickname. He refers to him as Jacob while talking with his spirit.

Marley's ghost is wandering about the earth as punishment for his selfish and greedy ways during his lifetime. He is doomed to wander in chains as a tormented spirit, seeking to atone for his sins and warn Scrooge to change his own ways before it is too late.
The three spirits were the Spirit of Christmas Past, the Spirit of Christmas Present, and the Spirit of Christmas Future.
The first Spirit (The Ghost Of Christmas Past) as foretold by Marley was there to show Scrooge his own past. This brought out many difficult situations that he suffered as a child and young man, most of which made him in to the person he was to to
As a spirit he was woeful and desperate to tell Scrooge of his impending doom
The first spirit-like visitor seen by Ebenezer Scrooge in "A Christmas Carol" is the ghost of his former business partner, Jacob Marley. Marley's ghost appears to warn Scrooge about his current path and to set the stage for the visits by the three Christmas spirits.
