The feud between the Grangerfords and the Shepherdsons had started many years before Huck arrived. He asked one of the Shepherdsons' sons what the feud was about and nobody remembers why or how is started. They just know that both families hate each other and it was brought to it's largest uproar when Sophia, daughter of the Granderfords, eloped with a son of the Shepherdsons.
