What does it take to become a romance writer?

Salary? Perhaps a little education would be appropriate here. Some jobs pay you by the hour. Some jobs pay you by the month (flat rate, no overtime).

Some jobs pay you by the piece. (I'll give you $2.00 for every gaget you make for me provided that it passes QA inspection) Some jobs don't follow ANY of the above guidelines. A realtor is paid a percentage of the sale price of every house that sells. (generally 1.5% to the listing realtor, 1.5% to the listing broker, 1.5% to the selling realtor, 1.5% to the selling broker. But that's just a general rule; everything is negotiable) Other types of salesmen/women are also paid a percentage of their gross sales. Entertainers are paid a percentage of sales as well, but it's often a sliding scale... that's why they need an agent. The agent negotiates how much the entertainer is paid. Singers, actors, boxers, golfers, and yes... even romance writers, are paid whatever they can negotiate. It's usually some kind of percentage of the sales or a flat rate per book with special consideration if the book is turned into a movie. There is a special phrase for that kind of work, "You don't get what you're worth, you get what you can negotiate."

Wow... too many to count. Some of the top ones are, of course, the genius Nora Roberts. Others are Jude Devarux, Kate Martin, Jane Ann Krentz, Amanda Quick, and tons more. Many of them also have aliases that lean towards a different end of the spectrum than their main works. The real question isn't "how many are there?" because, geez, that list gives me a headache, but "which ones are really good?" As I've gotten older, my taste has distinguished itself, and let me tell you, there are some really crappy romance novels out there. If you find a good author, stick with her, because if you like the style, it often doesn't change, and romance novelists are kinda infamous for pumping out TONS of books. My personal favorite is Nora Roberts. She's a modern romance novelist, who has recently been adding sprinkles of magic and murder to her books. Other common time periods are Medevial, Regency/ Victorian England, Old West, and modern. While some of the older ones can be cheesy, modern novels can seem cynical, and, well, stupid. It takes a while to carve a decent set out of a lot of the crap that floats around, but it can be done.

There is no average salary. It depends on a multitude of factors, such as how big your fanbase is, how many books you release a year, how well received those books are, who your publisher is (ie if you write category for Harlequin, you have a built-in fanbase of sorts, but the books only remain in print for a short period of time), and many other factors. The lucky ones make enough to quit their daytime job (that doesn't mean they live in luxury, it just means they make enough to pay their basic bills). Most do not even earn that much..they still work an outside job or have someone else (ie their hubby) helping them pay the bills.
