What is beastly arms about?

The Beastly Arms is about an 11 year old boy named Nickel (Nicholas) who has a kangaroo rat named Miriam. He loves animals and Photography and knows lots about both. He sees things in a different way than everyone else. He lives in the city, and when the land lord raises the rent Nickel's mom can no longer afford it so they have to move. Nickel discovers the beastly arms, an apartment building in a bad neighborhood is really nice on the inside and the rent is very cheap. Nickel wants to move in very bad because he knows the building is "alive with secrets". I thought it was a pretty good book.
