A 13-year-old boy named Brian Robeson travels via a small Cessna plane (2-seater) to visit his father. The pilot suffers a heart attack, and Brian manages to land the plane in a lake, escaping serious injury. He is left with nothing but a hatchet that he received as a gift from his mother. Over the course of 54 days, Brian learns to survive in the wilderness, creating a bow, arrows, and a spear, as well as a shelter from a rocky overhang. After a tornado, he finds that the tail of the plane has been moved within reach, and dives into it to retrieve the survival kit within, which contains items such as a .22 rifle, first aid kit, and emergency transmitter. He activates the transmitter and, later, a fur trader arrives via float plane and returns him to civilisation.
