Fidel Castro didn't want Cubans escaping. His birth dad was staying at Cuba. On the way to US, his mom and step dad died from drowning. Elian was 5 and he survived all the way to the US, holding onto a log. The coast guards had found him. He was like a celebrity. Fidel Castro and Elian's step dad back in cuba finally made him come back though.
