he doesn't want to let lennie in his room because lennie is white and crooks, being black, isn't allowed in the white bunk house, so why should a white man be allowed in his room? he changes his mind because he wants someone to talk to and feels grateful for the company.
One reason which Crooks has a shotgun could be to defend himself from any unexpected attacks. Crooks is the only black character in the novel, and during the time when the novel is set, racism was still very common. Black people were lynched for crimes which they often did not commit. It is mentioned in the book that one Christmas on the ranch, Crooks was forced to fight another ranch worker. The shotgun could be to prevent any further attacks like these.
crooks used his race as the reason he's lonely. since he's black he has to be kept separated from the others at the ranch which gives him no one to talk to. He even gives a flash back to when he was younger and he would hang out with the white kids, but as he grew older he became more and more lonely without anyone to talk to because there aren't any other black men around him.
the reason why crooks doesn't allow anyone in his room is because he feel like he could do what he wants its his own space ,makes his own rules he is not allowed in the bunk house because of segregation. so he trys to do the same for the other he thinks sense he cant be in the bunk house then they shouldn't be allowed in his room either
He is lonely because he has been shunned and outcast ed by everyone due to them being racist. crooks, stable-hand, is another lonely character at the ranch. The chief cause of Crooks loneliness centres on the fact that he is a coloured man. Most of the men constantly put down Crooks and use him as a scapegoat even to the point of calling him the "N" word. Because Crook is a coloured man, he had to live by himself in a small room in the barn. Crooks becomes so accustomed to his constant isolation, that he is suspicious of any man who suddenly tries to make friends with him.
I'm not an expert on this but: The trumpet started out as hollowed out animal horns, that were used to draw attention for whatever reason. As society advanced, people began to make trumpets out of brass, still using them to call attention when needed. In the 15th or 16th century, they started being used in music. Crooks (small sections of pipe) were used to vary the pitch when needed. As time passed they became a normal part of the orchestra. Eventually valves were invented and crooks became unnecessary.
