The Trumpet started out as hollowed out animal horns, that were used to draw attention for whatever reason. As society advanced, people began to make trumpets out of brass, still using them to call attention when needed. In the 15th or 16th century, they started being used in music. Crooks (small sections of pipe) were used to vary the pitch when needed. As time passed they became a normal part of the orchestra. Eventually valves were invented and crooks became unnecessary.
