The poem was written in the 8th century, where it took place was sometime before that, the 5t century i do believe.

When Beowulf is fighting Grendel's mother his warriors stay and wait for Beowulf to come out of the water even after a long period of time. By them staying there and wishing Beowulf would come out the water alive they showed loyalty to Beowulf.
