Look at the story for the typical signs of another genre:

  • Does it have a lot of love scenes and angst between two people? Then it's a romance story.
  • Does it have a lot of spooky scenes and a dark atmosphere? Then it's a Horror story.
  • Does it have a puzzle or crime to solve? Then it's a mystery story.
  • Does it have a lot of science in it and try to imagine the future? Then it's Science Fiction.
  • Does it have magic and/or fairy tale creatures? Then it's a fantasy story.

Of course, there could be adventure contained within any of those other stories too. The key to a story being pure adventure is that it has action scenes without being any other genre. Action scenes, often in exotic or exciting locations, are what makes an adventure story an adventure. There should be pretty much non-stop action and tension in an adventure story.
