Marley's purpose is to begin the saga of the three spirits that visit Scrooge. Marley is also there to explain to Scrooge his bad deeds and wrong doings and warn him of the terrible fate that will come if he does not change his ways, such as when he informs Scrooge on his "ponderous chain" he has forged, he says, "The weight and length of the coil you bear yourself? It was full and heavy as this, seven Christmas Eves ago. You have labored on it since." Marley was also Scrooge's only friend and now that he died, the reader is shown Scrooge's loneliness.
This usually refers to the conversation between marley and scrooge. Scrooge does not yet believe that Marley's ghost is real. He blames the vision on an a undigested piece of beef, a piece of uncooked potato indeed says scrooge there is more Gravy than Grave about you
He's scared at frst and doesn't belive that Marley's ghost is real. But then he starts to believe by some of the things that Marley says and does.
The chains that Marley wear symbolize all the mistakes that Marley made when he was alive. Built from the same mold as Scrooge, he was a miser and is warning Scrooge that if Scrooge doesn't change he will carry around these same chains but longer because Scrooge has lived longer than Marley. These chains are like the sins you have in your conscience. It is a burden. Marley says "I wear the chain I forged in life. I made link by link, and yard by yard; I girded it on my own free will, and of my own free will I wore it. Is its pattern strange to you?" Marley anguishes his mistakes and doesn't like the chains, he has learned to live with his mistakes and knows he can't change them. To make a long story short, the chains symbolize mistakes and are a warning to Scrooge to change so he can escape the fate of Marley's.
This is one .Scrooge, talking to Marley's ghost, and says "There's more of gravy than the grave about you!"
This is in reference to the Ghost of Jacob Marley who had been dead 7 years. The ghost looked as he would after 7 years in the grave
When he reurns to warn Scooge he says that he is doing so only because he has been allowed to do so. He cannot sya why it is this night that Scrooge can see him but he warns him that his life must change of suffer the same perils as he
In Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol," Marley's ghost screams "Mankind was your business" to Ebenezer Scrooge to emphasize the importance of caring for others and being socially responsible. Marley is highlighting how Scrooge's selfishness and lack of compassion have caused harm to those around him and to society as a whole. The phrase serves as a powerful reminder for Scrooge to reflect on his past actions and to consider the impact he has on others.
It is important for Scrooge to believe in Marley's ghost because it serves as a catalyst for his transformation. Seeing Marley's ghost and accepting the reality of the supernatural opens Scrooge's mind to the possibility of change and redemption, guiding him towards self-reflection and ultimately leading him toward a more compassionate and generous way of life. Without this belief, Scrooge may not have been motivated to confront his past actions and make a positive change.
