The men in Weed started a party to lynch Lennie because they misunderstood his actions with a girl in town and believed he posed a threat due to his size and strength. This misunderstanding led to fear and anger among the townspeople, resulting in the mob mentality of wanting to take matters into their own hands.
The town from which George and Lennie are fleeing at the beginning of the novel is called Weed. They left Weed because Lennie's actions involving a woman's dress caused trouble and led to them escaping to find work elsewhere.
A small town called Weed.
The girl's dress in Weed and the mouse Lennie carries are both soft. The fact that they are both soft to Lennie are what they have in common for Lennie. Lennie loves to touch soft things.
While they were working in Weed, Lennie saw a girl wearing a pretty red dress. Focused on the dress's beauty, he reached out to touch it, and the girl screamed. Lennie panicked, and holding on even tighter, would not let go. George had to "(sock) him over the head with a fence picket to make him let go" before he would release the dress. The girls eventually reported the incident as an attempted rape, and "the guys in Weed start(ed) a party out to lynch Lennie". George took Lennie to hide in an irrigation ditch, and when darkness fell, they fled the vicinity. Lennie did not actually hurt the girl, but, being big and strong, he scared her badly. As Slim observed, "(Lennie) ain't mean", and George agreed, explaining, "(Lennie) jus' wanted to touch that red dress like he wants to pet them pups all the time".
They left weed because Lennie had grabbed a girls dress because it looked soft and he like petting soft things. The woman got scared and started yelling which made Lennie hold on tighter when George finally got him to let go they had to run because the girl ad gone around saying Lennie had raped her so they had to run away and leave weed.
A small town called Weed.
Lennie and George first went to a ranch in Weed, California, where they had to flee due to an incident involving Lennie and a girl's dress.
Lennie loves to pet soft things, such as mice and in this case a dress. He sees a girl with a red dress and because he likes it he reaches out to feel the dress. However, the girl becomes distressed and begins to scream. This in turn distresses Lennie and he "gets all mixed up" and he holds on because that is all that he can think to do. But the girl continues screaming and by this time Lennie is extremely scared so all he thinks to do is hold on. He is extremely strong and when George comes after hearing the girl from a distance he has to hit him over the head with a picket fence to make him let go. Upon Lennie letting go, the girl reports Lennie and says that she was raped. So people in Weed start a party to kill Lennie. Lennie didn't actually hurt the girl but he did scare her.
The town that George and Lennie are running away from in "Of Mice and Men" is Weed. They are fleeing from Weed after Lennie's inappropriate behavior with a woman led to trouble.
He lied to the man, he said the job was done, but what really happened was that Lennie got them kicked out of Weed
