Why does Lennie show a violent streak when George tells him about the future ranch?

While describing their future, George tells Lennie that they will own a dog and a couple of cats, but Lennie will have to make sure that the cats don't get hold of the rabbits. In response to this, Lennie states, "You jus' let'em try to get the rabbits. I'll break their God d*mn necks. I'll...I'll smash'em with a stick." (Pg.58) This statement shows how irrational Lennie can be, which justifies how he is unable to survive on his own. Also, Lennie's statement shows how prevalent violence is during this time. Lennie does not see any other way to keep the cats from his rabbits, other than hurting them, or killing them, just as Carlson can see no other alternative but to shoot Candy's dog.
