Atticus is trying to teach Jem that courage is not a man with a gun, but someone who goes into a situation knowing that he has lost, but decides to go through it anyways.
Atticus describes Aunt Alexandra as being a traditional Southern lady who places great importance on family, social status, and heritage. He mentions that she is very concerned with the Finch family's reputation and wants Scout to behave in a more ladylike manner.
