Ms. Hussey was released quickly from jail in "Chasing Vermeer" because Petra and Calder found evidence proving her innocence and convinced the authorities of the truth. The evidence showed that she was framed for the crime and played no part in the art theft.
In chapter 15 of "Chasing Vermeer," Ms. Hussey mysteriously disappears from the school trip to the Chicago Art Institute. She is later discovered in a nearby gallery with a critical clue relating to the stolen Vermeer painting.

The first 5 chapters are pretty boring but if you ready the end it is pretty exciting when the culprit is revealed.
