depends on experience and schooling, my wife only makes 34000 a year but she is working for a small outdoors wear company. which is pretty typical for a first design job. but once you get experience, head designers at the larger companies start closer to 60-70k a year and goes up from there. my advice is go for it if you want but don't be picky on your first wage/title, every position that pays better wants experience. plus with the economy there are a some highly experienced designers out there looking for jobs as well.
