Institutionalization is a large word that describes a theory created by Berger and Luckmann. It is a theory that talks about how, over time, a certain way of doing things becomes the norm in a society and is not questioned. Mankind has a tendency to created a certain pattern, or habitualize, his actions. These habitualized actions, due to the Social Constructivist Theory, then become the norm, and aren't questions when there could be more efficient ways to do the task. Take, for example, shoveling snow. Most people, when they shovel snow, tend to just go in rows down the driveway or just take one shovelful at a time and clear the snow out that way. I have found it to be more efficient to push the snow into a large pile, much like sweeping a room, and then throwing the snow pile into the grass, thus getting the job done more quickly and efficiently. It isn't the norm and I have received strange looks. I think this is a prime example of Institutionalization. I did a task and didn't follow the "accepted way" of doing it and was looked upon as different.
