Actually, the only reason WHY people thought mermaids existed because someone saw a manatee under the water and claimed that he saw a mermaid. When the manatee was caught, the man said "That's the thing I saw" and then a scientist said it was a manatee. The guy was put in a mental hospital and he stayed in it until he was 90. Now, when people think of the massive creature, they think of the man. Scientists gave the manatee two nicknames. They are "The mermaid people never see" and "The sea cow". The second one makes sense. I will let you figure out why they are known as "The sea cow" on your own. I can't tell you EVERYTHING about the history of the mermaid.
