The answer is yes. Fish do need at least one male in the tank to fertilies the eggs. However in some cases the fish will first lay the eggs then the male will fertilize them.

Can a female Corydoras lay eggs without a male?

It is likely the eggs are "spermed" (for lack of a better term) after they are layed. **This happens in the wild as well. The female does not need a male to lay eggs, but the eggs need a male to fertilize the eggs. The eggs will just stay eggs in the tank without a male to fertilize them. The female may also eat the eggs if left in there with her.

Will canaries lay eggs if there is no male?

no not really.Well, I do know that there is a particular kind of fish that, when the need is really high, a female can change itself into a male (with male genitalia), mate with the female and therefore lay eggs. However, this only suits the question when the transsexual fish is to be considered a female.

Why is your female fighting fish getting fat with no male?

A female Betta does not need a male for her to come into breeding condidion (develop ova). She does however need a male to assist her in order for her to lay (spawn) those eggs.
