As far as I know, Petco is very good at taking care of them. Petsmart is also good too. I prefer Petco, because my hometown Petsmart, does not take good care of them. So, it depends on where you live. Basically, it's your opinion. (:
Hermit crabs love coconut shavings and sea food. But they also need places to climb on and places to hide in. hermit crabs can live for years is properly takes care of here is a website that helps me a ton.
Whenever they molt, they get bigger. People dont know how fast exactly, but many times a year.
Hermit Crabs do not recognize their owners such as dogs and cats and rats and parrots. Their though process is rather simple and your hermit crab will most likely only recognize you as "the big thing that is trying to eat me". One Hermit Crab may become more comfortable with people, however, but that just takes time, though with the way most hermit crabs neglected most do not like long enough for that. If you take proper care of your hermit crab, though, it might get comfortable and maybe even become excited at feeding time!
It is very hard to breed hermit crabs but some people have however. You will need to have a salt water pool and many other things to suit their needs. An exoskelton is the layer on the hermit crabs actual body that they shed when they outgrow it. (similar as how a snake sheds their skin) A shell is that which the hermit crab takes as a home that normally if from snails.
They dont! Hermies cat so stressed out their limbs fall off, they get stressed out when they dont have the right conditions.
Yes crustaceans do molt because they have exoskeletons meaning they have and outer shell. I believe. every 2 years or months they molt out of their shells. in other words, they leave their shell
Hermit crabs are hard to breed so if you want work look no further. You need at least five hermit crabs in a large tank with lots of plants. If you do have this and have a few males and females this could get ugly, the males fight to the death for each female and will kill others. When the winner defeats crabs he has the right to mate with any female, and the others have no right. Now this is how they do it. The male first courts her by going close and pinching his claws, then the male forces her to take her shell off by gripping it and taking it off then the takes his off an they mate four thirty minutes tops, then the ending they put the shells on and The End.
Hermit crabs live in the Caribbean so they have modified gills which means they need to keep them moist so 70 80% humidity and 70 -80 F temp. Hermit crabs live on the first line of trees (closest to ocean) they can drown in the water!. they love to climb trees and will climb them in groups of hundreds to eat bugs and eat fallen fruit like mangoes from the trees, since they are scavengers they also eat fish washed up from the ocean. hermit crabs are very social so get at least 2. 1 gallon of space per hermie. They molt so they burrow underground and takes weeks to months. Do NOT dig them up, if you think it is dead and the tank smells like dead fish it IS dead.
I have 6 hermits. Once they decide to change shells, they do it very quickly. They are vunerable without the protection of their shell. I have 7 hermits. I have seen 4 of them change. It would probobly take about 10 seconds.
Crustacean (the group that contains crabs, lobsters, and shrimp) shells are made of a material called chitin, which is naturally hard and brittle. Softshell crabs are those who have just shed their exoskeleton. It takes a while before their hard chitinous shells grow back.
Crabs will hide under rocks after they have molted while their new shell is soft. During this time they are very vulnerable to predators. The time it takes for their shell to harden varies by species but for some it is a few days.
