The mother has the baby in what is called an "egg sac". The baby swims along with the mom still attached to the umbilical cord, once the umbilical cord falls off of the mom and baby, it can swim and do everything that an adult shark can do!

Once the egg sac has been laid, the female shark has no further contact, and swims away. The hatching young are on their own from the start - many won't survive to adulthood.
