When lakes and other bodies of water freeze, only the top foot or so actually freezes, and because fish aren't mammals so they don't have to surface for air like sea mammals do (like whales and stuff), it's ok that the top part of the water is frozen. Hence, ice fishing.......So all in all the fish are just fine....
