How do you know if a goldfish is dead?

A healthy fish usually has all its fins erect, looks pert and attentive. A fish hanging about and not swimming actively indicates the fish is not happy/healthy for some reason and a lowered/flattened dorsal fin is a sign that the fish is definitely off colour. A healthy appetite and solid looking poos rather than a streamer hanging from its bottom (anus) are also signs that the fish is doing OK.

The best way to avoid illness in fish is to make sure their water is in perfect condition. Goldfish should live over 15 years, so the previous answerer has clearly been failing rather dramatically at keeping Goldfish.

A sick Goldfish will be dull looking, have clamped fins, maybe white stringy feces, it will be lethargic too, maybe sitting motionless on the bottom. Things like gulping air at the surface, brown/black spots that weren't there before, or blood streaks in the fins are also bad. Any abnormal bloating (to the point the scales are sticking out) or dramatic weight loss also means the fish is sick.

Goldfish are very messy so ruin water quality easily, the above symptoms are tragically common because people don't keep these big high maintenance creatures properly!

well, seeing as you have given no symptoms that maybe means that you are being very precatious with your fishes and if you are very worried about it then just take the wee bligers to the vet

It depends. What are the symptoms? Is your goldfish swimming upside down? Gasping for air? Barely moving? Having discoloration? There are many goldfish diseases with many different symptoms.
