An electric air pump oxygenates the water in an aquarium, this allows the fish in the fish tank to breath. if there was no air pump the water would lose its oxygen and the fish would drown.
Maybe its because the air taken in from the air pump is toxic to fish. Try not to spray or use chemicals such as air fresheners, detergent etc near the pump. Hope this helps.

Most of them pump air into the tank so that the fish can breathe better. You should get one if you have a bamboo shrimp, I know from expirience. The usefull thing an air pump can do is to drive a filter which is designed to remove the poisons that occur in every fish tank. Simply using it to blow bubbles is a waste.

What the bubbles really do is cause the water to circulate, bringing water up from the bottom of the tank to the top of the tank where it can pick up oxygen from the air. Any other method of circulating the water in the tank would work just as well.
