Ponies eat a wide range of food, from grass to cereals. Carrots and Apples provide a bit of variety. Google horse feed for more info. Contrary to most books, sugar lumps are NOT good for horses. Polos can be given.

This is a big question. You should read a book on 'Horse Feeding/ Nutrition/ Diet' etc. But generally speaking a horse has it's water and roughage/ forage (pasture, grass, hay) which provides the horse's main nutrition - which is what the horse survived on in the wild. However, when nowadays domesticated horses are used for work we provide them concentrates/ supplements/ extra feeds for extra nutrition that is lost during work.

People used to hand measure feeds for the horses ex. a certain amount of each ingredient to provide overall nutrition - like (this is definately not correct, just an example) but oats might provide 20% of the daily protein needed and 36% of the daily carbohydrates etc. Although nowadays people buy specially formulated feeds with complete nutrition - like there is a bag of complete nutrition for stallions or a bag for complete nutrition for young weanlings. It is usually fed with chaff.

We also sometimes add extra supplements like hoof supplements if needed and the occasional tit - bit!
