Humans, like all mammals, have an almost identical respiritory system as fish. The fish draws water in through the mouth and over the gills and out through the gill flaps. Blood that has been around the body of the fish delivering Oxygen and collecting Carbon Dioxide is also pumped through the gills. Here is the magic, the gills exchange the Carbon Dioxide for Oxygen in the water, the carbon dioxide[CO2]is discharged into the water and the Oxygen goes into the blood to be delivered around the body and the process repeats itself. In mammals air is drawn into our lungs and down into the Alvioli, special sacs that have blood pumping through them that has been around the body delivering Oxygen and collecting CO2 .Here is the magic, sound familiar, it should, its identical to the fish. The only difference between mammals and fish is the medium we draw the oxygen from. For mammals its atmosphere, for fish its water.Through the machinations of evolution specialist ways have been adapted so that we can each use the oxygen from different mediums

What parts of the respiratory system function as the main sites of gas exchange?

In the respiratory system, it is the alveoli. In the circulatory system, it's the capillaries. They are similar in that both have walls that are only one cell thick, they are both the thinnest parts of their systems, and they are right next to each other. (They diffuse through to each other.)In the respiratory system it's the Alveoli and in the circulatory system it's the capillaries :D
