I've had many Freshwater Fish and room temperature seems to work. with tropical fish you may need a heater but not with goldfish.

Yes! When I was about twelve years old, we introduced two goldfishes (we won them at a church bazaar) into the tank with a variety of tropical fishes. The tropicals were all dead (skeletons at the bottom of the tank) the very NEXT DAY. It was horrible.
